How to Balance Fitness and Education When You’re a Student

Being a well-rounded student is a tough job, especially when you try to balance fitness and education. It’s not an easy task, but it’s not impossible either.

With a strict schedule and some of these tips, you’ll be able to juggle both parts of your life like an expert. 

Make Sleep, Study, Workout, Repeat Your Life

You’ve probably had those nights where you’ve stayed up pretty late cramming for a test or writing up a paper, right?  Well despite getting your work done (we hope), this lack of sleep isn’t doing you any favors.

Doctors recommend between 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Not getting enough sleep will make you sluggish and unfocused. This makes you less mentally focused and also negatively impacts your physical state.

I suggest you get in the habit of studying, sleeping and exercising at a certain time each day and stick to it throughout the weeks and months to come.

Combine Exercising and Studying If You Want to Step It Up

You might be thinking that exercising and studying together sounds a little ridiculous – maybe even dangerous. Well, hear me out.

There are many stationary machines at gyms that would allow you to get your workout in plus some much-needed study time.

Read over your notes or other study materials while doing some light cardio. Elliptical machines and stationary bikes are great for this.

And you don’t have to stick with visual study aids. Listen to audio books, record your lectures or even record yourself reading your notes aloud and listen to them as you workout. This is also great for anyone taking language courses.

In Order to Balance Fitness and Education, Set Achievable Study and Workout Goals

Too often people make strict plans only to find that they can’t stick to them. Set goals that are reasonable and achievable.

One goal setting formula is the “3-3-3-3-3″ method. This breaks down your goals into groups of three. You set 3 goals per day, 3 per week, 3 per month, 3 per year, and then 3 per your lifetime.

Why is this goal setting method so effective? Because it’s so simple. 3 isn’t a big number of goals to set so that makes it more realistic and easier to achieve.

Keep in mind that your goals should be specific. For example, ”be physically fit for the summer” isn’t a specific enough goal. You can’t measure your progress.

Instead, ”I’ll work out 3 days this week for at least 45 mins” is a much more effective goal. You can measure your progress and know exactly what you’re trying to achieve.

Keep Track of Your Progress For Organization and Motivation

If you’re looking for a way to stay motivated then keep track of your progress. Writing down all that you want to accomplish and then checking items off your list will help you stay organized and focused.

Either keep a journal or use an online application to record your progress and manage your short term and long term goals.

This will allow you to balance fitness and education with much more ease.

Taking Breaks is Important For Your Body and Mental Health

What do people usually do when they take a break? They might check Facebook, Instagram or walk over to the kitchen to grab a quick snack.

That’s not the healthiest way to spend your relaxing moments. Instead of scrolling through social media, do a quick 10 min work out or take a short walk down the street. This will help you clear your mind and effectively balance fitness and education.

People are capable of focusing on subjects for short periods of time. If you study indefinitely, you’ll be more likely to let your mind wander and give up on the task. Instead, I recommend using the Pomodoro Timer technique. It breaks down your study or workout time into 25-min increments with 5-min short breaks.

Whatever goals you set or steps you take to achieve them just remember that as a student this is a very pivotal point in your life. You’re transitioning from child to adult. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t set aside some time to have some fun. Remember to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience!
